I saw a film.. The film in question – 500 days of Summer.
If you haven’t seen this film yet, then go see it!Now whenever I see a romantic comedy with my friend, she always comments on how it’s fake and is not reality, Que rolling eyes..
So when we watched 500 days of Summer, she went on about how horrible Summer was and how she was wrong to do this and that. I found that this was a very true portrayal of a certain type of relationship, which is the type of relationship the majority of us have had.. Hence why a lot of people are single – ahem.
Which was what my friend did not want to admit.
What I liked about the film was how this type of lovelorn character, which would normally be portrayed by a female – was played by the exceptional Joseph Gordon Levitt. While the effortless Zooey Deschanel played the cool realist, the one pulling the strings….his heart strings to be exact.
While watching I wondered what the guys in the audience were thinking, as here was a guy who is lovesick fool for this girl. A guy who needs to define the relationship, a guy who says I love you first without sounding like a stalker. This guy’s heart is broken when he gets dumped and lets everyone see it… we don’t normally see this in films. Its nice and I want to see more of it!

The way the film was cut and edited was very reminiscent of how one would look back on a relationship in your own life. Details, the detail in the little things were perfect touches. No big gestures or grand clichés, nothing obvious. Except for that dance… well you might feel that way inside!
The ending was interesting. If the roles were reversed, would we be comfortable with the ending? Would they even allow an ending like this? A female character rides off into the sunset, independent and happy…. Or are we happier seeing a female character married, settled, OK… Which did happened to Summer, but in the way that was deliciously unpredictable for her character's nature and was central for us to see, so we could feel his despair and essentially to squeeze out a few more drops of heartbreak.
The ending was hopeful for all those who have had their heartbroken.

As one door closes…
